Being an excellent pointer the
Weimaraner falls into the category of hunting dogs that the AKC
classifies as eligible to compete in field events sanctioned by
that organization. Here the Weimaraner has to bring to bear all
of its’ natural skills to compete with other pointing breeds.
Intelligence in where to find birds, a keen nose to locate them,
swift legs to best the competition and intensity and staunchness
on point indicating the find. In this sport the smaller, quicker
dog tends to excel. The size of the original deer and boar dog
bred in Germany and the tendency to trail game instead of use
the wind for scent challenge the Weimaraner in this sport. Not
to worry, the Weimaraner rises to the challenge and perfects
each skill and brings strong competition to these events.
Bench Shows
A flashy show dog, the
Weimaraner needs to be better than most of his competitors.
There is no long hair or speckled coat color to hide any flaws.
Every muscle, sinew and bone is there for the judge to see. A
big mover in the ring, an intense competitive spirit and a regal
look make the Weimaraner an exceptional show dog.

Tracking
A natural sport for the
Weimaraner, it is almost like cheating! A naturally keen nose
and hunting instinct make this a perfect sport for a dog with a
hound heritage. All you need to do is keep up!
Guard Dog
In Germany the skills of being
a guard dog are much more finely honed than here in the United
States. The Weimaraner can be an awesome, intense and
intimidating guardian of your family and property. Naturally
aloof from all but his own family the Weimaraner will sound an
alarm at an intruder and if necessary take further action.
Lure Coursing
Though not bred for the
swiftness of Lure Coursing over a course, the natural instinct
to pursue prey gives the Weimaraner the talent for making a fun
and competitive day of chasing the lure and beating the clock.
Therapy
Therapy is potentially one of
the Weiamraners finest skills. They are intuitive and gentle,
patient with older and younger folks and the infirm.
Fearlessness helps this breed around noisy hospitals and creaky
wheelchairs. The natural inclination to be close to humans and
make physical contact brings to the fore one of the classic
Weimaraner traits that has been carefully bred into them.
Agility
Agility
is probably one of the
best inventions ever created for a Weimaraner. Fast! Exuberant!
Fun! And Energetic! All Weimaraner skills. “Katie bar the door”,
the only problem this breed has with this fun sport is being
able to go slow enough.

Obedience
Obedience is definitely a test
a Weimaraner has to work at. Doing slow and apparently useless
things challenges a Weimaraner’s thought processes but the
desire to please, patience and intelligence makes them very good
at it.
Dancing
This is a new sport to do with
your dog and true to the spirit of the way a Weimaraner thinks:
if you like to do it and its fun, your Weimaraner will like to
do it! Tall and leggy with excellent coordination and
athleticism a Weimaraner makes an excellent dance partner.
Earth Dog
In their dreams Weimaraners
all aspire to be Earth Dogs. They are excellent diggers,
furious, strong and determined. However the size of their
excavations is a bit daunting to most owners
Herding Dog
Weimaraners are NOT good
herding dogs!! This is the only skill I urge you to not try with
your Weimaraner. Chasing sheep and ducks and moving them around
seems very much like a waste of effort for a Weimaraner. They
are much too intelligent for that. Simply go straight to the
livestock, dispatch it and bring it home. Weimaraners find this
the simplest, fastest and most efficient way to put food on the
table.
Companion Dog
Retrieving
Because the correct Weimaraner is
bred to be the consummate companion and hunting dog, retrieving
from the water is one of the requirements they must pass to
receive their Field Trial Championship. Unlike most other
sporting dogs, the Weimaraner is required to “do it all”. Game
birds such as ducks, pigeons, geese, pheasant and chukar are retrieved
for the family table. The Weimaraner Club of America emphasizes
this prized trait by offering titles in retrieving. Novice
